"The Spinner of Inishere" - The Strolling Players

The Strolling Players present The Spinner of Inishere, written and performed by Mairéad Sharry.
"the island can be a prison or a paradise"
Delia, a traditional widow living on the Aran Islands, spins wool and knits for the summer visitors, who provide a captive audience for her stories of island life: a great love story, a tragic drowning and a bizarre murderer.
Her life seems as labyrinthine as the stone walls of her island.
Does her gift for spinning extend to her story telling? Is Delia, the spinner of Inishere, spinning yarn or spinning a yarn?

Duration: 50 mins

Tickets: 6 euro/ 5 euro concession

Monday, July 2nd until Thursday, July 5th, 8.30pm
Town Hall Studio
"Sparks"- Hounds' Hollow Productions

"Sparks" is a fractured story told through the eyes of Gerry – an electrician who is tormented by his past.
By turns disturbing, savagely funny, startling and visceral, this one-man performance is a labyrinthine journey through Gerry’s increasingly erratic memories using his own voice and the voices of others.
Adrift in the horror of memory, he searches for a sense of self in an environment which restricts as much as sustains him.
With sorrow, humour, anger, and wit, Gerry’s world is revealed.
"Sparks" was short-listed for the PJ O’Connor Award for Radio Drama in 2011.
It has been re-imagined as a one-man show.
Hounds' Hollow Productions is a small production company based in the Burren area of Co. Clare, Ireland.
We are interested in producing works which explore the dark side of humanity. "We are for the Dark".

By Pat Hynes. Starring Darren Killeen.

Duration: approximately 45 minutes.

ALA Forum Theatre Presentations: "Divide and Conquer"

ALA, the community theatre organisation, will do a Forum Theatre presentation on fracking.

Forum Theatre is an effort to find alternative solutions to an issue of concern to the participants. A play on a subject, in this case fracking (a process where water, sand and chemicals are injected into the earth at high pressure in order to fracture rock formations deep underground in the hope of liberating natural gas that would otherwise be inaccessible), is presented to an audience; then after some discussion it is performed again, but this time the audience is invited to participate in the action.

Whether you are in favour or opposed or wish to have a say on Fracking, we invite you to attend.

"A Dangerman" - Dick Walsh

Zeus raped a 12-year-old boy, Jesus told his followers to maintain the free market, and Mao is worshipped today by millions of people. Why? Not only are these things true, but there are reasons linking them, which we need to know.

A dangerman is simply dangerous because there is a danger you'll end up talking to him - at the library, a party, anywhere. But that doesn't mean what he has to say isn't important. It is important.

Hear him out: he'll change your mind.

Written and performed by Dick Walsh. Directed by Martin Sharry.

Duration: 50 mins.

Not suitable for children!

Admission: 5 euro

Update: Double bill Saturday, July 7th - Hourglass 6pm, Ophelia 8.30pm
Town Hall Theatre
"The Hourglass" and "Ophelia" - Teatr A Part

Klepsydra/The Hourglass is an indoor show by Teatr A Part from Poland, directed by Marcin Herich. The word "klepsydra" in Polish has two meanings: it means hourglass, but also obituary notice.
This is an almost non-verbal solo performance by Monika Wachowicz, joining the poetic of the theatre of the body, gestures and emotions as well as elements of dance theatre. It shows different forms of solitude. In the last phase, built on slow, improvised movements and minimal use of decoration and costumes, the attention of the audience is focused on the inner spiritual vibrations. The performer's dance is simultaneously full of joyous feeling and grief. http://www.apart.art.pl/hourglass.htm

Ophelia is the latest intimate indoor project by Teatr A Part, directed by Marcin Herich. It is not a mere adaptation of the famous plot from Shakespeare's play - the myth of Ophelia is used to investigate the duality of the female mind, emotions and decisions in the face of dramatic moments of existence. This is another solo performance by Monika Wachowicvz and was produced with two versions: one verbal, one almost non-verbal.   http://www.apart.art.pl/ophelia.htm

Please note that both of the above shows are for over-18s only!

Teatr A Part is a contemporary visual and physical theatre company, formed by director Marcin Herich. It has played in over 30 countries around the world. The performances operate with a wide scale of artistic means, full of symbols and metaphors, and enter deep into human instincts and secrets of existence, into meanings which are almost imponderable. For more information see http://www.apart.art.pl/stow_eng.htm

Tickets: 10 euro

Saturday, July 7th, & Sunday, July 8th, 8pm
Bank of Ireland Theatre, NUI Galway
"Velvet Revolution" - Truman Town Theatre

Velvet Revolution is an exciting new play from Truman Town Theatre. Having dazzled audiences in Kerry and Mayo, the drama is now set to make its debut in Galway. In typical fashion the drama is dialogue-based with lots of wit, sarcasm and black humour.
Fyodor and Shelly are a young couple living in an undisclosed town in rural Ireland. Shelly is the beautiful seductive blonde that torments the insecure Fyodor with her adulterous antics. She constantly alludes to the men she met at the bar, her past lovers and the lack of excitement in her marriage by comparison. Fyodor plays the struggling writer. A victim to naive romance and artistic values, he uses gambling to escape what he believes are the torments of his tortured soul. We enter the play at a point where Fyodor has lost a huge amount of money and is now in the dangerous debt of loan shark Kevin. Shelly has just returned home to announce that she has met the same Kevin by chance and taken the opportunity to invite him over for dinner.
Fyodor is sure that this is a plot to kill him.The drama escalates as the time of Kevin's arrival draws closer.

At times dark, others hilarious, and often touching, Truman Town have produced one of their best works to date. Using only two actors and a minimal set, the play is a feast of tension, humour, suspense and ultimately a delightful illustration of the bizarre Irish psyche. From writer Mick Donnellan, who brought you sell-out shows such as Shortcut to Hallelujah and Gun Metal Grey, this is a show hotly anticipated and not to be missed!

Starring Cathal Leonard and Kate McCarthy

Tickets: 10 euro/ 8 euro concession

Saturday, July 7th, 9.30pm

"Sharpe as a Knife, Blunt as a Bennett" - Steven Sharpe and Steve Bennett

Steven Sharpe of Sharpe in the Lab will be performing pieces from his acid-toned, openly gay, acoustic R&B one-man show. He will take you on a cliché-crushing journey through his problems with relationships, alcohol and the Irish gay ‘scene’.  It’s not all rainbows and cocktails for this ‘Hot Mess’.
Steve Bennett is fast making a name for himself on the Irish comedy circuit as one of its foremost musical comedians. Bennett’s show is a concise odyssey cramming music, poetry and stand-up about a misunderstanding of life and sexuality into an action-packed burrito of awkwardness.
Both Steves will be performing stand-alone pieces, as well as collaborating together and as part of their smash hit comedy quartet The Gingerbeard Men.
A one-off night composed especially for Colours Fringe Festival, this combination of razor sharp wit, intelligent comedy and damn catchy tunes is not one to be missed.

Atlantic Pirates

The Atlantic Pirates have become one of the best known bands in Galway through their constant presence on Shop Street, playing some of the great Irish folk songs. Yet the four members - James Gallagher (banjo/vocals), Wayne Wilder (guitar/vocals), Stephen 'Pecker' Dunne Jr. (banjo/vocals), and Iven 'the German' Markquard (fiddle) - are not just about playing a few popular Dubliners numbers; the quartet eat, sleep and breathe folk music, and their love for the genre is equalled by a desire to put Irish folk music back in a position of prominence and popularity.

"Paper Rich"

A bankrupt solicitor`s final chance for salvation.

Thomas Glynn was once a top solicitor with a thriving practice in Galway. In the midst of the Celtic Tiger, Glynn was seduced into the property development frenzy. Success followed success, and Glynn on paper became richer than he could have ever dreamed. Abruptly in 2008, the property market collapsed in Ireland and Glynn`s sprawling empire crumbled . The fragile pillars supporting Glynn s financial colossus cracked under the strain. Overnight , he lost his business, his wife and children along with all the trappings of life which had become customary.
One cold morning, Glynn leaves his small apartment in the city and drives to a nearby lake, where he intends to escape his problems permanently with the help of his hunting rifle.
However, there is one last chance for Glynn to save his life, his respect and perhaps retrieve his family. He stumbles upon a `tiger kidnap ` where a local bank manager is taken hostage and forced to withdraw cash. Glynn resorts to a childlike desperation and with the takings embarks on a tense cross-country journey to Dublin Airport.
On his journey, Glynn encounters reminders from his past and looks ahead to an uncertain future.
Michael Kinsella (The Bill, Mobs America, Mobs Canada TG4) stars as Thomas Glynn in a tense parody of the past thirty years in Ireland. The movie is directed by Martin Keaveney (Souvenir, Synchronicity).
PAPER RICH is a co-production of Salt Hill Pictures and Galway Technical Institute.

VISUAL ART
--------------------------------------
Wednesday, July 6th, 7.30pm
The Niland Gallery, Merchants Road
"Gathering"

"Gathering: The connection between high art and high food" is a unique evening of contemporary visual art and gourmet food. The title draws off the word's double meaning; it is at once the searching for and collecting of sustenance and the assembly of people. "Gathering" will reach to new audiences in new ways in a new venue for a single night banquet and screening at 7.30pm on Wednesday. The video will remain on display that evening and be open to the public after dinner. The work The Right Way (1983) by the world-renowned Fischli and Weiss features the artists dressed in rat and bear costumes, scaling Alpine slopes and crossing rivers as they seek the right way. They forage, fight and frolic, and ultimately the work is both philosophical and humorous. This piece is coupled with a themed banquet in the gallery, prepared by the best chef in Connaught, Jess Murphy of Kai Café and Restaurant (www.kaicaferestaurant.com). The meal will respond to the artwork. The tables and seating will be a unique adaptation to the space and film, as the whole event becomes an unforgettable synthesis of art, installation, food and film.

The set three-course meal is 30 euro per person. Reservations can be made through thenilandgallery@gmail.com or at Kai Café and Restaurant.

The Niland Gallery is an Engage Art Studios project and is made possible by the generous support of the Niland family and the Arts Council.

Three-course meal: 30 euro per person

Art Gallery, Quadrangle, NUI Galway
 "In Print Exhibition"

Fresh from the Fine Art Printmaking course at G.M.I.T., ten talented and diverse budding artists will be exhibiting their work in the Art Gallery at NUI Galway. This exhibition promises to be interesting and exciting and will showcase etchings and screen prints. The artists have taken their ideas through one or another of these printmaking processes to create something original and dynamic, each print with its own novel composition and concepts. This group have been students at G.M.I.T. for three years and have worked on the body of work on show since January 2011. They have mastered the many techniques involved in printmaking to such a professional standard that each work is as captivating as the next.
The artists are Moira Comiskey, Tania Lee, Darragh Murray, Jonny Flynn, Stacey Power, Doris Vukovic, Ashling Gavin, Emily Real, Alan Clinton and Eric Bradley.

Simon Murphy - "making space - in the strange and unknown"
Drawing on elements of our human and animal energy struggle and the need for industrial energy sources, this piece calls for a sympathetic eye. If we learn to have more compassion for our environment, we can learn to embrace this strange and unkown world instead of trying to continually dominate and exploit it.

Marie-Jeanne Jacob - "Wherever your feet may take you..."
This piece investigates the notion of feet as a symbol of the human condition, how, through triumph and suffering they carry us through life, witness to the fragility of our humanity. The installation explores different paths and journeys taken and is a statement on the imprints we all leave behind. Members of the public are invited to participate: materials will be provided.

Caroline Coleman - original paintings

Rachael Webb - "The Happy Heart"
Using found objects and things that would otherwise be seen as rubbish, this piece encourages you to engage with it and ask a question. In a world that increasingly equates happiness with the accumulation of new shiny things, it reminds us to remind ourselves of the simple things that bring us joy.

Marina Wild - original paintings
